He had a very conventional view about what he felt was ideal art, which to him had to be naturalistic, customary, frequently in the Romanesque, Hellenistic or Renaissance style, and portraying scenes of heroism and drama, or rustic and alpine tranquility. He saw this as art as the trail to true perfection, a representation of all that was unadulterated and good in the world, while he fated and lastly banned the "degenerate art" of the modernists as being symptomatic of a sick mind.
