Elements of Films. This paper discusses different elements of film. Mise-en-scene is the French theatrical term for "placing on stage"- which originally referred to the arrangement of visual elements in a stage production, defined by a proscenium arch. The proscenium arch separates the audience from the action. In theater, the mise-en-scene is three-dimensional, whereas on film it exists in a two-dimensional frame. There are three types of movement to consider when analyzing the overall movement of a film: camera movement, subject movement and optical movement. Camera movement involves the actual movement of the camera itself around stationary objects of people. Subject movement involves the motion of the subject in relationship to the frame. Optical movement is the changing of focus from one object to another, designed to draw the eye of the viewer from one part of the frame to another.
